About This Page
It is possible to annotate genes using only web-based tools. However, since many bioinformatics programs are initially designed for UNIX systems, one can also use a command-line system to run BLAST and RepeatMasker. This requires an introduction to UNIX, also essential to running Consed and phredPhrap. A training worksheet and answer key are provided here.
